Sammilani History

The historical line of Bhakta Sammilani begins with the Sarvabhauma Bhakta Sammilani established in 1916 at Kokilamukh Saraswat Math in Assam. Later, within Odisha, the Utkal Pradeshika Bhakta Sammilani started in 1947 and gradually became a travelling annual institution through which NSS branch regions carried the Sangha spirit into different local communities.

This history is important because Sammilani never developed as a static conference at one fixed place. Its movement from one location to another allowed devotees from different districts to host, participate, serve, and internalize the ideals of Sangha life in a direct and practical way. Over time, it became a living network of devotion, organization, and shared responsibility.

Living Historical Legacy

The historical role of Sammilani is therefore twofold: it preserves memory, and it trains continuity. Women devotees, sevaks, and younger wings all gradually found active place within this larger annual culture. That continuity is one of the reasons Sammilani remains central to the NSS understanding of collective spiritual life.
